GP & Specialist - Referral Guidelines

GENERAL POINTS

• The more clinical information provided, the better both for justification of the procedure and for the subsequent reading of the images.

• Is a Radiation exposure the best way forward?

• Are additional views really necessary?

• Are there any contraindications?

 

PLAIN FILM

• No prep, If you want additional view these must be clearly justified

CT

• Is there another imaging modality that doesn’t involve a Radiation exposure, is this really necessary?

• Prep is often needed, Abdominal, prehydration, etc Contrast is often needed, renal function assessment is mandatory.

• Any history of allergy, atopy, etc

MRI

• Consider absolute contraindications: pacemaker, defibrillators, some valves and clips but not most joint prosthesis. If in doubt ask.

• Consider Claustrophobia, is Sedation needed?

• If contrast is needed, Renal function assessment is mandatory.

• Prep may be needed

ULTRASOUND

• Prep is often needed, drinking water or fasting.

• There are no real contraindications
