Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a computerised system which uses harmless high frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the body. It is a safe technique used in all areas of your body, most commonly known for its use during pregnancy. Your doctor or midwife will tell you when you need an ultrasound scan to help with the diagnosis of your condition, or to assess your baby during pregnancy.
THE PROCEDURE
During the ultrasound examination you will lie down on a bed. A Sonographer, specially trained in the use of ultrasound will carry out your examination. You may be asked to change into a gown for some examinations, but for pregnancy and most other examinations you can come to your appointment in casual comfortable clothing. They will start by putting a water-based jelly on the skin over the area to be examined. The ultrasound probe is then placed on the jelly, which is a sound conductor, to produce the images. You will be completely unaware of the sound waves produced by the probe and there is no discomfort during the examination, apart from the sensation of a full bladder if you are having a pelvis examination. The examination usually takes around 30 minutes. You should feel free to ask any questions during the examination; however it may not always be possible to provide immediate answers. It may be necessary to review your images and, at times, discuss them with the Radiologist to best interpret the results.
PREPARING FOR YOUR ULTRASOUND
When you book your appointment the staff will inform you of any preparation required. For pregnancy, pelvic and kidney scans your bladder needs to be full in order to visualise the organs clearly. The best way to achieve a full bladder is to empty your bladder 1 1/2 hours prior to your appointment then drink 1 litre (4 glasses) of water over the next half hour, completing 1 hour before your appointment. Do not go to the toilet. For scans of your abdomen, such as the gallbladder it is important you do not eat or drink anything 6 hours beforehand. For a musculoskeletal ultrasound generally no preparation is required.
YOUR RESULTS
After the examination you will be able to return to your usual activities. If the problem is urgent, your doctor/midwife may ask you to return to their clinic. If the problem is non urgent, your doctor will receive the report usually by the following day. The examination is computerised, if you would like your images to take home either printed or on CD this can be arranged with reception.
